Ann and Lucia were connected by the undetected hole that surrounded the hot-water pipe and drove through the wall in Lucia’s apartment to the heater in Ann’s office next-door. The office was once part of the apartment but Stanley Evan—the owner of the unit—constructed the illegal division in order to acquire, in addition to the 1,600 dollars for the studio apartment, another three hundred and seventy six dollars more rent. Stanley had a thing for odd numbers and according to his landlordial science, the odder the number, the more punctual this sum was paid. It was a violation of co-op by-laws, not to mention numerous city codes and regulations, to separate and rent out space in this manner. But this did little to deter the divisions that Stanley Evan had constructed in each of the units he owned throughout the Upper West Side.

All of the units were under the guise of a temporary sub-let because the co-ops generally required owner occupancy. He swept his tracks by installing two separate entrances, the prodigal A and B doors just inside the original front door of each apartment. “I am the Lord of my Land! Stanley growls above the billowing form of his giggling wife. “I am the Lord! He purrs above the coaster-size rings that tug on her ears. He had six apartments in all and 15 rental agreements.
